Una

Met the amazing Mark Baument’s equally amazing mum Una last week at my talk near Perth.  They say behind every great man there’s a woman (“and behind her is his wife”).  Well in Mark’s case it’s Una, who helps organize and keep him moving on far from home (probably in order to speed him back again), whether it’s biking round the world, rowing across the atlantic, or trying to cut a path through the jungle that grows around you once you try and reap the well earned rewards that come from such adventures.

I can never understand why people are some times hostile to people like Mark, or others, who do adds, write books, and talk to corporate bodies.  I suppose when someone does well at something you love, you feel that that should be enough, and when they use that thing as a commodity (climbing, biking…golf!), they somehow diminish themselves and the thing you love.  It’s like your favorite underground band suddenly appearing on Now that’s what I call music 100.  But who would you rather have on your TV screens, or making a living from what they do; people like Mark Baument, Bruce Parry and myself? Jade Goody?

Fingers crossed Speakers from the Edge will be running a tour for Mark next Autumn (along with the equally great John Beatty) and I’m looking forward to working with both Mark and his Una.

Who knows maybe we can cut a track and get it into the charts for Christmas.
