Talking Business

I've been talking to business for the last five years, including BP, Barclays, Price Waterhouse Cooper and many others, something that's quite surprising when you consider I've never really had a proper job (what do I know about business).

I guess what I have to say works because I just tell my own story (no 'lets get to the summit together' bullshit), and also more importantly I keep it funny and entertaining (i.e. listening to me isn't like work).

Business Talks

I endeavour not to stick to rigid presentations, and enjoy creating talks that suits the focus of the event (I have a lot of stories), but below are two common talks I do:

Lessons in self leadership

In 2001 I undertook an eleven day solo of one of the hardest climbs in the world: the Reticent wall on El Cap, a climb that I could not retreat from, a climb on which I had a high chance of dying on. This talk describes how someone can find the inner strength to attempt something that seems impossible, and reflects heavily on a difficult childhood, and experiences - many negative - that combined to make this impossible climb possible.

This talk has proved very effective at motivating teams and individuals, especially those faced with projects that seem daunting, and where self motivation is necessary

Length: 50 minutes

Suitable for all ages

The weight of leadership

In 2009 I agreed to help Major Phil Packer climb El Capitain in Yosemite, one of the hardest climbs in the world, and a route that would take a week to scale. The problem was Phil had never climbed before, couldn't walk having been injured in Iraq, and had to worlds media watching. We also only had seven days to pull it off.

As the leader of the project this was one of the hardest climbs of my life, juggling a team of five who'd never climbed together, tough weather, finding the fine line between bullying and motivating Phil, plus filming the whole thing for ITV every night!

This is a funny and though provoking talk, that deals candidly with the pressure and responsibility of leadership, as well as building on mistakes you've made in the past

Length: 50 minutes

Suitable for all ages
